Universe: Gensomaden Saiyuki
Type of work: 200+-word ficlet
Contains: Minor theft and science
Summary and/or notes: How Ken'yuu got his first Ph.D.
It's three o'clock in the morning, and Ken'yuu is so close to the answer he can taste it. This formula has been eluding him for days, but this is the right approach, he knows.
His lab partner-- three years older and convinced his younger colleague was incapable of elementary calculations, much less higher work in biochemistry-- fell asleep hours ago. Ken'yuu kicked at him earlier just to see if he'd wake up; no effect. "I'm not putting your name on the final paper," he said to the young man.
Shen just snored. Ken'yuu lifted up his coffee mug and took another gulp. "Two more hours," he said, "and we'll find out if I'm right."
He unzipped Shen's backpack and riffed through its contents:a notebook, an energy bar, a skin magazine. Ken'yuu carefully removed the energy bar; he had the magazine back in his room, and it'd been fairly boring on the first read. He peeled back the foil wrapper and took a bite. Peanut butter; not bad.
"I'll get published for sure," Ken'yuu said to Shen, as the young man turned over in his sleep. "Maybe I'll be generous and let you ride my coattails. I suppose I could credit you as my 'research assistant.'"
He leaned over and inspected the bubbling blue liquid. "Two more hours, and I'll have my Ph.D.," he said. "Not a bad day's work."
